Gush and Glow

Sugar Creek Elementary School held a “Gush and Glow” reading event during the school day on Thursday, March 21, where staff transformed the Large Group Instruction room into a glow-in-the-dark venue for reading.

What’s more fun than enjoying a snack with classmates and glow sticks in a room illuminated by neon lights? Reading a good book while doing so!

Sugar Creek Elementary School is continuing to find creative ways to encourage reading among students. Last month, families gathered at the school after hours for the annual “Love to Read” night – an event with read-aloud rotations from teachers, high school students and community members.

Most recently on Thursday, March 21, Sugar Creek transformed its Large Group Instruction (LGI) room into a glowing venue for reading. Known as “Gush and Glow,” this event brought the school’s over 600 students to the LGI room for silent reading rotations throughout the school day.

As each class entered the neon room, teachers gave them Gushers to snack on and glow sticks to wear. Students brought a variety of books of their choosing to read during the event.

After a class finished reading, students had the chance to grab bookmarks to take with them – one with the Sugar Creek’s Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) rules and a few to color themselves.

PBIS is a systematic approach at Sugar Creek that promotes a “culture of learning” by teaching and acknowledging students’ positive behaviors. It is delivered by all staff to all students and begins with schoolwide expectations called “The Fantastic Four:” Be Kind and Respectful, Be Responsible, Be a Problem Solver and Be Safe.
