The Verona softball team opened the Big Eight Conference season with two wins.

Verona (2-3-1, 2-0 Big Eight) had a rally in the top of the seventh inning to propel them to an 8-5 win over Madison Memorial on Monday, April 8, at Madison College. The Wildcats were coming off a 9-4 victory over Sun Prairie West on Saturday, April 6, at Sun Prairie West High School.

The top three hitters in the Wildcats’ lineup did most of the damage, combining to go 6-for-11 with five RBIs.

Verona freshman Emma Parker went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Both senior Taylor Peterson and junior Sierra Ejercito finished 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI. The Wildcats pounded out 12 hits. The other multi-hit game came from Morgan Kirwan, who went 2-for-2 with one run scored and an RBI.

The Wildcats and Spartans were locked in a game tied at 4 in the seventh inning. Verona scored four runs in the seventh.

Verona junior Mallorie Kreuser pitched a complete game and gave up two earned runs on seven hits. She struck out 14 and walked one.

Verona 9, Sun Prairie West 4

Kreuser went 2-for-5 with a grand slam and four RBIs to power Verona to a 9-4 win over Sun Prairie West on Saturday, April 6, in Sun Prairie.

Kreuser hit a grand slam to left in the top of the first inning to kick-start the Wildcats. Verona scored two more runs in the second. Freshman Addison Quackenboss walked and Parker delivered a two-run double to give the Wildcats a 6-0 lead.

Verona had nine hits. Peterson was on base all five times she batted, going 2-for-2 with three runs scored and three walks. Ejercito finished 2-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored.

Parker drove in three runs and Quackenboss knocked in two runs.

Kreuser pitched a complete game and gave up two earned runs on three hits, while striking out eight and walking three.
