Senior Andrew Lalik had a hat trick, but the Verona boys lacrosse team lost its season opener 9-8 to Sun Prairie United on Friday, April 6, at Bank of Sun Prairie Stadium.

Verona senior Adam Zak opened the scoring with a goal at 8 minutes, 51 seconds in the first quarter. The Wildcats extended their lead on Senior Jacob Frick’s goal at 8:18. Sun Prairie rallied to take a 5-4 lead into the half.

Trailing by one goal late in the fourth quarter, Lalik scored to tie the game at 8 with 2:40 left. Sun Prairie freshman Ben Kalberer, who led Sun Prairie in scoring with four goals, scored with 28 seconds to go to seal the victory for the United.

Frick and Gil Weisensel each scored two goals. Sophomore Jackson Connor added an assist. On defense, senior Calvin Patton led with three ground balls. Junior Owen Lang won 67% of his faceoffs. Sophomore goalie Caleb Jabas turned in a .438 save percentage
