Verona Area/Mount Horeb’s Aidan Updegrove won three medals and set two new school records at the 2019 Division 1 state swimming meet. The Wildcats finished ninth as a team at state.

Aidan Updegrove became arguably the best distance swimmer in the history of the Verona Area/Mount Horeb boys swimming program.

Updegrove won three medals and set two new school records at the Division 1 state swimming meet, helping the Wildcats finish ninth as a team.

He finished fourth in the 500-yard freestyle with a school-record time of 4:44.07. He added a ninth-place finish in the 200 free (1:44.76), which broke his previous school record (1:45.34).

The Wildcats’ 200 free relay team of Updegrove, Oscar Best, Shane Rozeboom and Kyle Hoppe finished sixth with a season-best time of 1:26.41. Updegrove, best, Rozeboom and Ben Wellnitz took sixth in the 400 free relay with a season-best time of 3:11.17.

Updegrove is a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Madison majoring in mechanical engineering.
