The Mid-Summer Classic Tournament will host 24 youth baseball teams in Verona this weekend.

Charlie Huckelberry, president of Verona Little League, which is hosting the tournament, said the baseball tournaments during Hometown Days in June and the Mid-Summer Classic the Fourth of July weekend are two big fundraisers for the program.

“The concession stand is a big part of our fundraisers,” Huckelberry said. “All of our age groups have been competitive all year.”

Teams range in age from 8U to 11U to 12U to 13U, and Verona will have two teams compete in each division.

One improvement VLL has made this season is bleacher canopies on some of the fields for fans.

Huckelberry said they have offered a safety feature beyond the obvious protection from the sun.

“They provide protection from foul balls,” he said. “It’s been really well received. We have one of the nicest complexes in the area.”

Huckelberry said the funds raised will go toward paying staff to maintain the field. There are a couple projects VLL is targeting once they have enough money raised.

Huckelberry said the next projects are to replace one of the fences on one of the fields and put in two new scoreboards on two of the fields.

He said the biggest challenge is getting enough volunteers to make sure the tournament runs smoothly.

Admission and parking for the tournament is free.
