The Verona boys golf team had two of the top 10 golfers in the Madison Memorial Invitational to take third place Monday, May 13, at the Blackhawk Country Club in Madison.

Senior Austin Gaby tied Middleton’s Kip Sullivan for seventh after shooting a 5-over-par 77.

“Austin does such a good job of managing his game and can minimize damage well during a round,” coach Jon Rebholz said.

The Wildcats, ranked 10th in the Division 1 Wisconsin Golf Coaches Association state poll, shot a 335, 19 strokes behind ninth-ranked and runner-up Waunakee. Middleton, ranked fourth in Division 1, captured the team title with a 304.

Rebholz said a third-place finish was solid for not playing the best golf as a team.

Junior Cale Rufenacht carded a 79 to tie for ninth.

“Cale is opportunistic and does a good job of taking advantage of his length on holes when he can,” Rebholz said. “This puts him in position for birdies and having that ability can make up for bad holes that he might experience.”

Senior Ryan Mirwald finished with an 86, and sophomore Brock Prough carded a 92.
