Verona senior Austin Gaby shot a 2-over-par 74 on Tuesday, May 28, to qualify for the WIAA Division 1 state tournament.

Gaby birdied Nos. 8 and 9 to close out the front nine at even par in the Wisconsin Rapids sectional at the Ridges Golf Course and finished second.

“I’m excited that Austin gets another run at the state tournament,” coach Jon Rebholz said. “He certainly has the game to go low at University Ridge, and I’m looking forward to helping him to a high finish.”

The state tournament starts on Monday at University Ridge in Madison.

The Wildcats finished seventh in the eight-team sectional with a 333. Senior Ryan Mirwald didn’t compete.

Rebholz said Mirwald had a shoulder injury after the regional and couldn’t golf Tuesday.

“Anytime you’re not in the top two teams at sectionals, it’s a little disappointing,” he said. “We struggled overall to get a rhythm going on the course, and we put too many big numbers on the card. You can’t do that and expect to move on.”

Junior Cale Rufenacht carded an 81 and ended in a four-way tie for 20th. Sophomore Andrew Aune shot an 87 to tie for 33rd. Sophomore Jake Rebholz took 42nd with a 91.

Mount Horeb senior Kasen Fager shot an even par 72 to take medalist honors. Middleton won the sectional team title (306) and Holmen was second (311) to qualify for state as teams.
