Dave Hanson and Jake Wenzel blasted home runs, and the Stoughton Home Talent team crushed Waterloo 18-0 on the road Sunday, July 14.
Stoughton (9-3) remained in third place in the Southeast Section with four regular season games left. The Merchants trail second-place Jefferson by one game and Albion by 2.5 games.
On Thursday, July 11, the Merchants jumped out to an early lead and held on for a 5-4 win over Fort Atkinson.
Stoughton 18, Waterloo 0
Hanson blasted a three-run home run in the sixth inning and Wenzel hit a grand slam in the seventh to lead the Merchants to the rout.
Stoughton belted out 13 hits. Ervin Medina went 2-for-3. Winder Fuentes went 2-for-4 with a double, and Caleb Broege also went 2-for-4.
“We were due,” Stoughton manager Dale Seffens said. “We put it all together. We are starting to get to the end of the year and all of the games are meaningful.”
Stoughton jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the second. The Merchants tacked on five runs in the fourth.
Ben Riffle allowed just three hits in the shutout. He struck out two and did not issue a walk. Erick Sperloen gave up two hits in two innings of relief.
Night League Stoughton 5, Fort Atkinson 4
Hanson and Medina combined for five hits to propel the Merchants to a win over Fort Atkinson last Thursday.
Stoughton scored two runs in the first inning and three in the second. Medina went 2-for-2, while and Hanson was 2-for-3. Yonardo Herdenez and Ryan Nyhagen were 2-for-5.
Riffle started and pitched two innings. Sperloen tossed four innings in relief and gave up one earned run on five hits. He struck out four and did not issue a walk. Herdenez struck out the one batter he faced to get the save.
