The Oregon wrestling team opened the season Saturday at the Reedsburg Duals. Unable to cover all 14 weight classes, the Panthers went 0-5.
Senior Steele Mellum, who has the goal to qualify for the WIAA state tournament this season, highlighted the opening weekend for the Panthers, going 5-0 at 132 pounds. Senior Robbie Ruth went 4-1 at 182.
Oregon was without Jade Durmaj (illness) and Nate Hall (injury).
River Valley 54,
Mellum pinned River Valley’s Bryce Their in 1:43 in the opening round Saturday and senior Faith Trinidad received a forfeit at 106 pounds. The Panthers lost the dual 54-12 to River Valley. Oregon and River Valley each forfeited at 120, 170 and 195 pounds.
Lancaster 72, Oregon 7
Mellum scored a 17-6 major decision over Lancaster’s Matthew Crosby and Robbie Ruth won an 8-4 decision against Troy Klein. Oregon fell 72-7 to the Flying Arrows.
Monona Grove 41,
Freshman John Ruth (145) recorded a fall 50 seconds into his match against Monona Grove/McFarland and Robbie Ruth added a fall 4:56. Schliem and Mellum received forfeits. The Panther and Monona Grove co-op double forfeited at 120, 126 and 160 pounds. Oregon lost the dual of Badger South rivals 41-24.
John and Robbie Ruth and Mellum earned wins in a 66-18 loss to Riverdale in the consolation bracket.
Mellum defeated Jayden Marabelli, who was injured and unable to finish out the match at 132 pounds. John Ruth pinned William Spiller in 33 seconds at 138 and his brother Robbie added a fall in 43 seconds at 182.
La Crosse co-op 66, Oregon 17
Freshman Michael Schliem (132 pounds) and Robbie Ruth (182) won by fall against La Crosse Logan/Central and Mellum (138) added a 15-0 tech fall. Oregon lost the dual 66-17.
