Three players on the Verona boys soccer team were named first-team Big Eight All-Conference last month.

The first-team selections were: junior forward Jack Knight, junior midfielder Eliot Popkewitz and junior defender Sam Lynch.

The Wildcats (14-3-3 overall, 7-0-2 Big Eight) won the conference for the first time since joining in 2008.

Verona went on to win a regional title and advanced to the sectional semifinal for the first time in Division 1, and just the second time in history. Sun Prairie edged the Wildcats 2-1 in the playoffs.

Popkewitz was the leading scorer for the Wildcats with 15 goals and five assist. Knight had 12 goals and nine assists.

Coach Chris Handrick was named the conference’s coach of the year.

A trio of Verona players were second-team all-conference: junior forward Bennett Luttinen, senior defender Mason Jordan and senior goalkeeper George Ohm.

Luttinen had nine goals and five assists. Ohm had 30 saves this year and an 81.1 percent save percentage.

Sophomore forward Jonathan Gamez and sophomore midfielder Sam Abreu were each named honorable mention all-conference. Also named honorable mention all-conference are senior Bryan-Lopez Martinez (midfielder) and junior Gannon Simonett (midfielder).

Madison West had four players named first-team all-conference including senior Ian Shi (forward), senior Will Taylor (midfielder), senior Max Peeler (defender) and senior Alex Alvarado (goalkeeper). The Regents finished 9-2-5, 4-1-3 Big Eight) and took sixth in the conference.

Senior Lorenzo Canziani (defender) received honorable mention all-conference accloades.
