Verona Area International School families recently gathered to kick off the 2019-2020 school year with a community meal and fellowship on Thursday, Sept. 26.

Verona Area High School students Tamiya Smith and Aubrey Dawkins were crowned Homecoming Royalty on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Homecoming dance. Smith and Dawkins received the two highest votes out of the entire Homecoming court to be crowned.

Children experimented with oil and water, baking soda and vinegar and attempted to see whether objects could float last week during the Pre-K Science Nights. The events were held at Country View on Oct. 1 and Stoner Prairie on Oct. 2.

Second and third grade students at Verona Area International School celebrated the United Nation’s holiday “Day of Peace” by spreading love to their peers at Stoner Prairie Elementary and their neighbors at Savanna Oaks Middle School and Fitchburg Fire Station No. 1.


Sugar Creek Elementary held a Fun Run on Saturday, Sept. 28, at and around the school. The Fun Run route took participants down Church Street, on South Main Street and then onto Military Ridge State Trail, before making their way back to the school.

In February 2018, a few days after the Parkland, Florida, school shooting claimed 17 lives, a Verona Area High School student threatened to “shoot up the school.”

The district plans to deliver rules defining who is eligible for grandfathering into new attendance boundaries to parents by the end of the month.

An outside review of the Verona Area School District’s world languages program next month will include a look at student growth in the program and its ability to foster that success.
