Parking on East Cheryl Parkway will be restricted during Farmers Market Thursdays this summer while the street is expected to see increased use by commuters.

East Cheryl is the main detour for drivers that would normally use Lacy Road, which is being reconstructed this summer and closed to through traffic.

The Common Council approved the restriction, which applies to the area near the Farmers Market tent only for the hours of 2-7 p.m., at its April 25 meeting. The same vote approved parking restrictions in another part of the city and a lower speed limit on a portion of Nesbitt Road.

“It’s really just a safety issue to get more visibility,” said Ald. Aaron Richardson (Dist. 3). “There’s a lot more traffic on that road right now because of the detour.”

Ald. Dan Carpenter (Dist. 3) asked city staff to consider working with the Agora Pavilion to direct more traffic to the parking options there, including underground, which is free. City administrator Patrick Marsh suggested flyers being handed out at the market, as well.

In the same unanimous vote, the council also restricted parking on Williamsburg Way and Anton Drive because of the new layout of that roadway, including a roundabout.

“Removing parking from these areas will avoid conflicts with vehicles blocking the entrance to the roundabout or parking in (through) travel lanes,” the staff memo said.

The ordinance also reduced the speed limit on Nesbitt Road from 35 mph to 30 mph for the area that was reconstructed as part of the Verona Road project. That runs between Limestone Lane and McKee Road.
